At least 50 dead in Orlando shooting (World)

ORLANDO, Fla.

CNN reports that as many as 50 people are dead, and at least 50 more are injured, after a mass shooting in an Orlando nightclub.

According to CBS News, the shooting took place early Sunday morning at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

ABC News reports that the suspected gunman is 29-year-old St. Lucie resident, Omar Mateen, also deceased.

Associated Press ranks it as the deadliest mass shooting in U.S history.

According to CNN, the investigation of the shooting, and the alleged shooter, is still very much underway. CBS News reports the suspect allegedly made an allegiance to ISIS prior to the incident.

ABC News reports President Obama called the incident “an act of terror” when addressed the nation Sunday, June 12.

Reasoning:

This was the selection for top world story of the week because even though it is still a fairly new story, it is incredibly relevant to everyone’s daily lives. It’s a very newsworthy story based on timeliness, and the number of people it impacts, as well as future events. The story comes in a string of mass shootings, and will undoubtedly have an impact on this election year. As well as the possible ramifications the story has based off of the alleged shooters’ possible connections to foreign terror groups. Also, there are several upcoming high profile events that will certainly be on high alert following this incident. It has become instantly an infamous story because of the record-breaking death toll. There will be many follow up stories, and continuous updates as victims are identified, and motives are determined. Everyone will want to know. Even though it happened on American soil, I classify it as a world news story because it will surely impact people all over the world in many ways.

  1. Troy-

You did a nice job on this story. This news is absolutely heartbreaking, and I'm still trying to figure out what kind of person it takes to commit such a horrible act.

I also think your explanation was nicely done. This definitely will affect things. It's incredibly upsetting that it takes incidents like this to bring people together, too.

    Good job overall!

It was such a hard story to write about but I think the emotional impact of the story and the ramifications it will surely have made it the best pick. The brief probably seems a bit too vague now, but at the time I wrote it, there was still so much unfolding. I thought it was best to just run down the facts that were known at the time.

  2. Troy,

You wrote that extremely clear and concise, which made it easy to understand. Your reasoning was written extremely well also. The entire situation is just awful and beyond sad. You did a great job writing about such a tragic situation though.

    1. Thanks for the comment Elissa,

I wasn't quite sure about what to choose for my top story, but when this news broke I knew it had to be this one. At time I wrote this, there was still a lot of unknown information so by now this brief probably seems a bit to vague but I didn't want to over speculate on the details of the case.

Obviously a great choice for a national story for this week. You did a great job of highlighting the key facts and things that readers are looking for right away. Your writing was very clear as well. Great reasoning behind this story and good job relating it back to newsworthiness.

It's hard to think of a more newsworthy story. Few things like this can capture the entire world's attention

  5. Troy,

I really like how brief you kept the actual story, and how many different sources you used. One thing I hate for this story is the word "ranks" in reference to comparing this and past mass shootings in the United States. I'm not saying I hate that you used it - I'm saying I hate that we can even use a word like that because of how many mass shootings that have occurred now. It's really an unfortunate thing, and I certainly hope no others are added to the list we now have.

I know there's been so much new information released since the day of the event, and it can really be tough to envelop it all. Great job overall.
